Creating a culture of innovation.
Providence
Training Healthcare employees to innovate from within
We partnered with Providence to deliver an award-winning Human-Centered Design (HCD) curriculum alongside live pilots within the Oregon region. Our workshop series helped caregivers or “fellows” develop an outside-of-healthcare perspective, introducing and embedding techniques to frame, research, explore, and gain investment within the organization.
There is a growing optimism and desire within healthcare to introduce innovation into a conservative and historically risk-averse system. Providence is leading by example and has committed to training the next generation of healthcare providers, from front-line staff to management teams.
“Human-centered design has become a centerpiece of our innovation efforts at Providence. Through the Evolve training, our caregivers in the Providence Innovation Fellowship program are better able to understand people, their physical and emotional needs and what is most valuable to them."
— Former Director of the Business Accelerator
The HCD curriculum approaches the innovation process through four key modules supported by team-based coaching sessions. The inspiring series of workshops helped introduce fellows to best practice techniques and tools.
Providence is working to solve wickedly difficult problems, requiring sensitivity, empathy, and thoughtful application before being launched into the community. Live pilots of new services were built on HCD principles and launched in the Oregon region. Focus areas included: Customer Experience, Tele-Health, Employee Experience, Behavioral Health, Pediatrics, Cardiovascular Services, Diabetes Management, Women and Children, and Senior Care.
Over 6 years, we trained more than 80 caregivers and helped launch live community pilots – powered by over fifty community partnerships.
A guide to getting started.
Module 1
Learn how to frame and define an opportunity, build a hypothesis to test, and know you are solving a problem worth pursuing. This module helps teams understand the problem and build a hypothesis on who you are designing for.
Getting out there.
Module 2
Learn how to conduct primary research, connect with your end customers, and synthesize your findings into insights that drive action. This module helps teams identify the right people to connect with, gather observations, look for patterns, and edit thoughtfully to inspire action. Activities cover the history, the responsibility, and the craft of asking the right questions.
Bringing ideas to life.
Module 3
Learn how to collaborate, ideate, and prototype to explore potential and prioritize where to go next. This module helps teams learn by doing. Each activity explores different techniques to find the fastest path to experience. Participants are coached to rapidly turn ideas into a form that collaborators, stakeholders, or customers can experience and provide meaningful insights.
Telling stories.
Module 4
Learn how to share your vision, the art of storytelling, and how to gain investment within the organization. This module helps teams communicate the story and why it matters. Participants learn how to structure a story arc, connect with their audience, create compelling visuals, and ways to connect emotional drivers to business goals.
